The firearms industry in Belgium is one of the oldest in modern history. It began in the 1300's in the town of Leige, Belgium producing a variety of firearms including shotguns and various handguns and rifles. Firearms from the lower grade revolvers through some of the finest high–or "best grade"–shotguns in the world have been produced there. In the early history of Leige craftsmen, individuals specialized in producing specific gun parts and components. Often made at home, these components were then assembled and marketed by a co-op of sorts, administered by the principality or local govt. Still famed for its gunsmithing school, the manufacture of firearms continues to this day. The most famous factory still in production is FN Herstal, well known for its products like the John Moses Browning designs of rifles; pistols and shotguns still considered some of the best designs ever. The primary focus of FNH and FN USA now is the manufacturing of high end Military type firearms like the SCAR, FN SLP, M240, M249 and M16 rifles used by the U.S. armed forces. With some of the world’s finest and most experienced gun makers, Belgium continues to be at the forefront of the evolution of gun design and manufacturing.
