Ithaca Auto & Burglar NFA
Ithaca Auto & Burglar 20 Ga Shotgun Kit. SN# 384597 10" Barrel.
The Ithaca Auto & Burglar is a variant of the well known Flues model side by side shotgun. The Auto & Burglar was produced in two models; the first 10" was produced between 1921 and 1925 and the improved model 12" came out in 1925. It was made until the NFA of 1934 whose required purchase of a new $200 tax stamp prior to purchase hurt sales. Some say the Auto & Burglar was one of the reasons the National Firearms Act of 1934 included the Any Other Weapon (AOW) designation as it was reputedly used in many encounters during the time it was marketed. Its users included police, bank guards, and the general public for home defense. Its compact design and powerful 20 gauge shotgun round made it extremely effective at close range and where small size was a factor. Other gauges were made but only in very limited numbers.
The word "Auto" was short for automobile and the intent was for use in vehicles. The word "Burglar" simply referred to use against burglars in the home or business. This little shotgun has become prized by collectors for the affect it had on firearms laws and their history. It's interesting that one of the hottest trends in modern firearms are the short pistol gripped shotguns being marketed by the biggest makers. Obviously, this compact shotgun idea of the past will stay with us well into the future.
